About Derek

Derek C. Angus, MD, MPH, FRCP (UK), is a Distinguished Professor and holds the Mitchell P. Fink Endowed Chair in Critical Care Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. He serves as Chair of the Department of Critical Care Medicine for both the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and the UPMC healthcare system, a position held since 2008. He is also Associate Vice Chancellor for Health Care Innovation in Health Sciences at the University of Pittsburgh, Executive Vice President and Chief Innovation Officer at UPMC, Co-Director of the UPMC ICU Service Center, and Senior Editor of JAMA. Secondary appointments include Professor of Medicine, Health Policy & Management, and Clinical & Translational Science. He directs the CRISMA Center. Angus completed medical training with an MB, ChB from the University of Glasgow School of Medicine in 1984 and MRCP (UK) in Internal Medicine from University of Glasgow teaching hospitals in 1988. He undertook a Fellowship in Critical Care Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine in 1991, earned an MPH from the Graduate School of Public Health, University of Pittsburgh in 1992, and completed a Fellowship at the Safar International Resuscitation Research Center, University of Pittsburgh in 1992.

Angus's research specializations encompass learning healthcare systems, organization and delivery of critical care services, sepsis, severe pneumonia, multisystem organ failure, precision medicine, and causal inference methods. He has led large NIH-funded multicenter studies, including the ProCESS Investigators' randomized trial of protocol-based care for early septic shock, published in the New England Journal of Medicine in 2014. Key publications include the third international consensus definitions for sepsis and septic shock (Sepsis-3) in JAMA in 2016, Surviving Sepsis Campaign international guidelines in Intensive Care Medicine (2008, 2012, 2016), and an analysis of severe sepsis epidemiology in Critical Care Medicine in 2001. Awards and honors include the Distinguished Investigator Award from the American College of Critical Care Medicine in 2009, Master of Critical Care Medicine in 2012, Honorary Lifetime Membership in the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine in 2015, and election to the American Association of Physicians in 2017. He is a Clarivate Highly Cited Researcher.
