Devika Dibya Choudhuri is Professor of Counseling in the Department of Leadership and Counseling within the College of Education at Eastern Michigan University. She earned her Ph.D. and serves as a licensed professional counselor in Michigan and Connecticut. With extensive clinical experience, she has held key administrative roles including Interim Department Head of Leadership and Counseling, Counseling Program Coordinator, and Chair of the President's Commission on Diversity and Inclusion. An inaugural member of the commission, she also held the Michael G. Morris Endowed Chair in 2017-18 and received a sabbatical leave for 2025-26 to support faculty research and innovation. Her contributions extend to committee service, public lectures such as 'Talking About Trauma in the Classroom' for the Honors College, and leadership as President of the Association for Specialists in Group Work.
Choudhuri's scholarship centers on multicultural counseling, group processes, trauma, refugees, diversity, and LGBTQ+ identities. Notable publications include the book 'Fundamentals of Group Process Observation' (2023, co-authored with Christopher J. McCarthy), the article 'Buddhist Perspectives for Addressing Values Conflicts in Counseling' (2014, Journal of Counseling & Development), book chapters 'Multiplicity of LGBTQ+ Identities, Intersections, and Complexities' (2019) and 'Considerations for Facilitating Refugee Acculturation through Groups' (2020, co-authored with Shadin Atiyeh and Tahani Dari), and 'Association for Specialists in Group Work Guiding Principles for Group Work' (2022, co-authored with multiple colleagues). She co-edited works in the 'Counseling & Diversity' series addressing Arab Americans and LGBTQ Americans, and published 'Facilitative Conditions for Transformative Learning' (2009) on multicultural counseling education. Her research advances inclusive practices in counseling and higher education, influencing professional training and group work standards.
