Dr. Devon Smith serves as an Associate Professor in the Sociology Department at Palomar College, a leading community college in San Marcos, California. She earned her Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of California, San Diego in December 2008. As a full-time faculty member within the Division of Social and Behavioral Sciences, Dr. Smith has advanced from Assistant Professor to her current associate rank, contributing to the department's mission of preparing students for upper-division sociology programs at four-year institutions and supporting the Associate in Arts in Sociology for Transfer (AA-T Sociology) degree. Her teaching portfolio includes key courses such as Introduction to Sociology (SOC 100), Gender and Society (SOC 135), and Introduction to Women’s Studies (SOC 115), the latter being a core requirement for the A.A. degree in Gender, Sexuality, and Women’s Studies.
In addition to her instructional duties, Dr. Smith is the Program Director for the Palomar Gender and Women’s Studies Program, highlighting her specialized focus in this area. She is also a valued member of the Empowered Women team at Palomar College, which promotes gender equity and professional development. Dr. Smith actively participates in campus governance, including Behavioral Sciences Department meetings and Faculty Senate activities. She collaborated on presentations at Palomar College's Political Economy Days events, such as a session on feminism alongside colleague Susan Miller. Furthermore, she undertook a sabbatical leave in 2020-2021 for a research project designed to directly benefit Palomar students in sociology and related fields. Through these roles and contributions, Dr. Smith enriches the academic environment, fostering critical sociological perspectives and advancing gender studies at the institution.
