Dr. Diane Purvey is President and Vice-Chancellor, pro tem of Kwantlen Polytechnic University. She previously served as Provost and Vice-President Academic since 2022 and as Dean of the Faculty of Arts since 2012. Dr. Purvey first joined Kwantlen Polytechnic University in the early 1990s as a non-regular history instructor. Her primary teaching experience in that decade was at Thompson Rivers University, where she was hired as an assistant professor in 1998. In 2000, she completed her Ph.D. from the School of Social and Educational Studies at the University of British Columbia and soon after became an associate professor. She began her administrative career as chair of the School of Education from 2000 to 2004, coordinator of its master of education program from 2006 to 2011, and returned to the chair position in 2011.
During her time as Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Dr. Purvey oversaw the creation of standardized processes following a 2012 merger and initiatives such as the Arts Speaker series and City Studio. As Provost and Vice-President Academic, she delivered an Academic Plan, shaped post-COVID-19 teaching, and advanced reconciliation, decolonization, and Indigenization. She received Kwantlen Polytechnic University’s distinguished leadership award in 2022 and the Award for Excellence in Open Education in 2018. Dr. Purvey is a historian whose work includes co-editing Child and Family Welfare in British Columbia: A History and co-authoring Private Grief, Public Mourning: The Rise of the Public Funeral in British Columbia.
