Professor Dino A Giussani is Professor of Developmental Cardiovascular Physiology & Medicine in the Department of Physiology, Development and Neuroscience at the University of Cambridge. He holds a BSc in Physiology from Royal Holloway University of London and a PhD in Fetal Physiology from University College London, and was awarded the ScD degree by the University of Cambridge in 2016. He is also a Professorial Fellow and Director of Studies in Medicine and Veterinary Medicine at Gonville & Caius College, Cambridge.
Professor Giussani’s research focuses on fetal and neonatal physiology and developmental programming, with particular emphasis on the roles of fetal oxygenation in cardiovascular development. His work examines fetal brain sparing during hypoxia, the effects of perinatal glucocorticoid therapy on fetal cardiovascular function, the contribution of prenatal hypoxia and oxidative stress to intrauterine growth restriction and the developmental programming of cardiovascular disease, and the impact of maternal obesity during pregnancy on cardiovascular health in mother and offspring. He has received numerous awards and honours, including election as a Fellow of the Latin American Academy of Sciences in 2018, the FRCOG in 2017, the Royal Society Wolfson Research Merit Award, the Lister Institute of Preventive Medicine Prize Fellowship, and several named prize lectures. He has delivered the GL Brown Prize Lecture and served as President of the Fetal & Neonatal Physiological Society. His contributions have advanced understanding of cardiovascular regulation in fetal life and informed clinical practice in obstetrics and neonatology.
