Dr. Donna Long serves as Chair of the Department of Humanities and Professor of English at Fairmont State University, where she acts as the primary contact for the English major within the College of Liberal Arts and the English Education program, a joint initiative with the College of Education, Health and Human Performance. She earned her B.A. from the University of Tampa and her M.A. and Ph.D. from Florida State University. Long has held her professorial position since her promotion to full professor in 2011.
Since 2008, Dr. Long has been Editor-in-Chief of Kestrel: A Journal of Literature & Art, Fairmont State University's literary journal that has influenced Appalachian culture for over three decades. Collaborating with faculty members Dr. Elizabeth Savage, Dr. Robert Powers, and Dr. Nathan Myers, as well as student interns, she oversees the selection of submissions to uphold the journal's high standards, balancing regional Appalachian voices with contributions from around the world that fit Kestrel's theme and tone. She advises prospective contributors to read past volumes and notes the journal's dedication to emerging writers, including those previously unpublished, some of whom have received awards for their work. Under her guidance, Kestrel hosts annual celebrations featuring panels, readings, and networking that connect students with professional writers, leading to research projects, graduate recommendations, and enduring professional relationships. Long contributes to university service through faculty senate committees and participates in public literary events, including moderating discussions on writing about place and public readings. Her achievements include the Excellence in Academic Advising Award in 2007-2008, the University Faculty Fellowship Grant in 2022-2023, and selection as a top five finalist for the 2023 West Virginia Professor of the Year Award by the Faculty Merit Foundation of West Virginia.
