Rate My Professor Donrich Thaldar

Donrich Thaldar is a full professor of law at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban, where he chairs the Health Law & Ethics Research Interest Group. He holds the academic qualifications BLC LLB and a Master’s in Political Policy Studies from the University of Pretoria, a PGDip in Strategy and Innovation from the University of Oxford, and a PhD from the University of Cape Town. Prior to commencing his academic career in 2017, he practised as an advocate at the Pretoria Bar. He maintains a private law practice specialising in strategic litigation in reproductive law and has served as legal counsel or amicus curiae in several landmark South African cases in this field.

Professor Thaldar is principal investigator of an NIH-funded project investigating the legal aspects of data science in health innovation in Africa. His research interests include reprolaw and genetics and the law. In 2022 he was a visiting scholar at the Petrie-Flom Center for Health Law, Policy, Biotechnology, and Bioethics at Harvard Law School. He teaches Bioethics and Professional Legal Training in the LLB programme, coordinates the LLM programme in Medical Law, and supervises doctoral and master’s students. He presented his inaugural lecture as full professor on the topic of building a progressive reproductive law in South Africa.
