Dr. Doug Mackie serves as the Otago Zebrafish Facility Manager in the Department of Pathology and Molecular Medicine at the University of Otago's Dunedin School of Medicine. In this capacity, he manages the facility as lead technician, handling researcher training, day-to-day fish husbandry, and fish life support systems. Doug Mackie supports multiple University of Otago research groups utilizing zebrafish, including the Chromosome Structure and Development Group. His technical expertise ensures the smooth operation of experiments in biomedical and developmental biology research.
Dr. Doug Mackie previously held the position of research fellow in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Otago. He has been actively involved in marine science at the Portobello Marine Laboratory, serving as laboratory manager and responsible for data acquisition and maintenance of the sea surface temperature time series. Doug Mackie contributed to oceanographic projects such as the Southern Ocean Iron Release Experiment, acting as contact for related datasets in the Biological and Chemical Oceanography Data Management Office. In 2020, he was awarded Outstanding Professional Staff by the University of Otago Division of Sciences. Dr. Mackie has engaged in public science communication, authoring 'Debunking the climate change deniers' in the Otago Daily Times in 2008 and co-authoring 'Ocean acidification isn't science fiction' with Christina McGraw and Keith Hunter. He presented 'The Ocean of Tomorrow' in 2017 and co-organized the 8th New Zealand Ocean Acidification Workshop in Dunedin in 2015.
