F. Duncan M. Haldane is the Eugene Higgins Professor of Physics and Sherman Fairchild University Professor of Physics at Princeton University. He received his Ph.D. in physics from the University of Cambridge in 1978. Prior to joining the Princeton faculty in 1990, he held positions at the Institut Laue-Langevin in Grenoble, France, the University of Southern California, Bell Laboratories, and the University of California, San Diego.
His main research interests include strongly-interacting quantum many-body condensed-matter systems, especially those explored by non-perturbative methods, such as the geometry of the fractional quantum Hall effect, the entanglement spectrum of quantum states, model wavefunctions for the fractional quantum Hall effect, topological insulators, and Chern insulators. Haldane shared the 2016 Nobel Prize in Physics for theoretical discoveries of topological phase transitions and topological phases of matter. He is an elected Fellow of the American Physical Society, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the Royal Society of London, the Institute of Physics in the UK, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He has also received the Dirac Medal and Prize of the Abdus Salam International Center for Theoretical Physics and the Oliver E. Buckley Condensed Matter Physics Prize from the American Physical Society.
