Duy Dao is an Associate Professor of Business Technology Management and Area Chair in the Haskayne School of Business at the University of Calgary, within the Business & Economics faculty. His research spans the economics of software and digital goods, with specific interests in the economics of cybersecurity and the motion picture industry. Dao earned his Ph.D. in Management from the Rady School of Management at the University of California, San Diego in 2017, focusing on Innovation, Technology, and Operations. His doctoral thesis, "Essays on the Role of Negative Externalities in Information Goods," was advised by Professors Terrence W. August and Hyoduk Shin. He previously obtained a B.S. in Mathematics from the University of California, San Diego in 2011. Dao joined the University of Calgary's Haskayne School of Business in 2017 as an Assistant Professor and advanced to Associate Professor. He has received the Dean’s Award for Innovative Research from the Haskayne School of Business in 2022 and the Dean’s Research Scholar Award in 2019. Earlier honors include the Rady School of Management Fellowship (2013–2017), Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society induction (2011), and the UC San Diego Physical Sciences Dean’s Undergraduate Award for Excellence (2010).
Dao’s publications appear in leading journals, including "The Impact of Cryptocurrency on Cybersecurity" with Terrence August, Kihoon Kim, and Marius Florin Niculescu in Management Science (2025); "Economics of Ransomware: Risk Interdependence and Large-Scale Attacks" with Terrence August and Marius Florin Niculescu in Management Science (2022); "Market Segmentation and Software Security: Pricing Patching Rights" with Terrence August and Kihoon Kim in Management Science (2019), nominated for Best Student Paper at the Conference on Information Systems and Technology (2016); and "Optimal Timing of Sequential Distribution: The Impact of Congestion Externalities and Day-and-Date Strategies" with Terrence August and Hyoduk Shin in Marketing Science (2015). He serves as Associate Editor for Information Technology and Management since 2020 and has refereed for journals such as Management Science, Information Systems Research, and Production and Operations Management. Dao has presented his work at conferences including INFORMS Annual Meetings, Workshop on the Economics of Information Security, and Conference on Information Systems and Technology. In teaching, he has instructed courses like Introductory Data Analytics, Data Analytics I, and Gathering, Wrangling and Analyzing Data in R for graduate and undergraduate programs in business analytics. He contributes to doctoral committees and school committees, including the Haskayne Research Committee and Undergraduate Review Committee.
