Dr. Earvin Charles B. Cabalquinto is an Australian Research Council Discovery Early Career Researcher Award (DECRA) Fellow and Senior Lecturer in the School of Media, Film and Journalism within the Faculty of Arts at Monash University. He completed his PhD in Communications and Media Studies at Monash University in 2016 and earned a Graduate Certificate of Higher Education from Deakin University in 2021. His academic career features prestigious visiting positions, including Honorary Visiting Fellow at the Humanities Research Centre, Australian National University (2023-2025), Visiting Research Fellow at the Centre of Excellence in Research on Ageing and Care, University of Jyväskylä, Finland (2021), Visiting Scholar at the Centre for Mobilities Research, Lancaster University (2019), Global Exchange Fellow at Toronto Metropolitan University (2024), and Visiting Fellow at the Asia Research Institute, National University of Singapore (2025). Cabalquinto holds affiliations as a Research Associate at the Centre of Excellence in Research on Ageing and Care and the Emerging Technologies Research Lab, an affiliate member of the Monash Migration and Inclusion Centre, and co-convenor of the Migration and Mobilities Research Network. His accolades include the Faculty of Arts and Education Early Career Researcher Award for Career Excellence (2021), Excellent Teaching Result (2019), Academic Excellence Award (2012), and Chancellor's Lister with Summa Cum Laude honors (2012).
Cabalquinto's research expertise centers on the intersections of digital media, (im)mobilities, and migration, particularly the role of mobile devices and networked platforms in shaping transnational relationships, mediated intimacies, caregiving at a distance, crisis communication, homeland linkages, and digital inclusion and exclusion among migrants. Since 2016, he has produced over 50 scholarly outputs, including his sole-authored book '(Im)mobile Homes: Family Life at a Distance in the Age of Mobile Media' published by Oxford University Press in the Studies in Mobile Communication series (2022), which has influenced artistic exhibitions such as 'Remote Control' (2024) and 'Caught in the Landslide' (2025). He co-authored 'Philippine Digital Cultures: Brokerage Dynamics on YouTube' with Amsterdam University Press. His work appears in leading journals such as Mobile Media & Communication, Media, Culture & Society, International Journal of Communication, Convergence, Information, Communication & Society, Communication, Culture & Critique, and International Migration Review. Cabalquinto contributes to the field through editorial roles on the boards of International Journal of Cultural Studies, Convergence, Journal of Global Ageing, and as Book Review Editor for Mobile Media & Communication (2023-2025). He reviews grants for the Australian Research Council, Dutch Research Council, and European Research Council, and delivers keynote speeches, community workshops, and collaborates with migrant organizations on initiatives like the 'Apat ay Sapat' COVID-19 vaccination campaign for older Filipino-Australians.
