About Eberhard

Eberhard O. Voit is a Regent’s Professor Emeritus in the Wallace H. Coulter Department of Biomedical Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology and Emory University. He previously held the David D. Flanagan Chair in Biological Systems and served as a Georgia Research Alliance Eminent Scholar in Systems Biology. Voit earned a Diplom in Biology, focusing on zoology, genetics, and mathematics, from the University of Cologne in 1976, a Staatsexamen in Mathematics in 1978, and a Dr. rer. nat. (Ph.D.) in Developmental and Theoretical Biology in 1981 from the same institution. He completed postdoctoral research in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at the University of Michigan from 1981 to 1982. Before joining Georgia Tech and Emory in 2004, Voit held research and faculty positions at the University of Cologne, the University of Michigan, the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, and the Cooperative Research Centre for Temperate Hardwood Forestry in Tasmania, Australia. He directs the Laboratory for Biological Systems Analysis.

Voit’s research centers on computational analyses of complex biomedical systems, including genomic, metabolic, and signaling pathways, with applications spanning microbial and plant systems to human diseases. He has authored or co-authored approximately 250 scientific articles and book chapters, along with several books, including Computational Analysis of Biochemical Systems: A Practical Guide for Biochemists and Molecular Biologists (2000), Pathway Analysis and Optimization in Metabolic Engineering (2002), A First Course in Systems Biology (2017 edition), The Inner Workings of Life: Vignettes in Systems Biology (2016), and Systems Biology: A Very Short Introduction (2019). His highly cited works include "Computational analysis of biochemical systems: a practical guide for biochemists and molecular biologists" (2000, 1270 citations), "Recent developments in parameter estimation and structure identification of biochemical and genomic systems" (2009, 499 citations), and "150 years of the mass action law" (2015, 264 citations). Voit is an elected Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering, and the Society for Mathematical Biology. His contributions have advanced systems biology methodologies and their applications in biomedical engineering.
