Ed Hassler is an Associate Professor in the Department of Computer Information Systems at Appalachian State University’s Walker College of Business, having joined the faculty in 2016. He serves as Director of the Master of Science in Applied Data Analytics program, a position announced in 2025. Hassler also holds the role of Chief Data Officer for the Center for Analytics Research and Education and is an Editorial Board Member for the Journal of Information Systems Applied Research and Analytics. His academic credentials include a Ph.D. in Management Information Systems and an M.S. from The University of Alabama, an MBA from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, and a B.S. from DeVry University. Before entering academia, he was a master instructor for the U.S. Air Force, a senior network systems engineer in the internet services and telecom industry with experience in systems development, and an Intelligence Analyst in the U.S. Air Force.
Hassler’s research focuses on data analytics, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, evidence-based software engineering, technology adoption, smart supply chains, energy systems efficiency, and IoT applications in apiculture. Notable publications include “Identifying barriers to the systematic literature review process” (2013), “A method for mining combined data from in-hive sensors, weather and apiary inspections to forecast the health status of honey bee colonies” (2020), “Outcomes of a community workshop to identify and rank barriers to the systematic literature review process” (2014), “Identification of SLR tool needs–results of a community workshop” (2016), “Designing a smart honey supply chain for sustainable development” (2021), “Good farming practices in apiculture” (2019), and “Vision for SLR tooling infrastructure: prioritizing value-added requirements” (2017). His work has garnered over 480 citations across 30 publications. Hassler has earned the Dean’s Club Professorship (2024), Dean’s Club Research Prize (2021), and recognition as Top Journal Reviewer for 2023 at the Information Systems & Computing Academic Professionals Conference.
