Professor Eddie Kuo was the founder of the Centre for Chinese Studies at the Singapore University of Social Sciences (SUSS), where he served as Academic Advisor from 2008. He held the position of Emeritus Professor at Nanyang Technological University (NTU) from 2011 and previously served as Founding Dean of the Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information at NTU from 1992 to 2003, as well as Interim Dean of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences at NTU from 2003 to 2005. Earlier in his career, he held various roles at the National University of Singapore, including Head of the Sociology Department from 1986 to 1990 and Head of the Mass Communication Department from 1990 to 1992.
Educational qualifications include a PhD from the University of Minnesota in 1972, an MA in Sociology from the University of Hawaii in 1966, and a BA in Journalism from National Chengchi University in Taiwan in 1962. Research interests encompassed new media and globalization, cultural policy and national integration, the sociology of multilingualism, and perspectives in Asian communication. Selected publications include the 2016 book Language co-authored with Brenda Chan, the 2016 chapter “Language, Culture and Identity: Challenges of Nation Building in Singapore,” and the 2010 article “The Asian communication debate: Culture-specificity, culture-generality, and beyond” co-authored with Georgette Wang. He received awards such as the Hsin Yun Outstanding Communication Award in 2011, the AMIC Asian Communication Award in 2007, the Public Administration Medal (Silver) in 2001, and the Public Service Medal (PBM) in 1997. Professional roles included membership on boards and committees related to bilingualism, Chinese heritage, media development, and bioethics, as well as editorial positions with journals including the Asian Journal of Communication, which he founded.
