About Eduardo

Eduardo S. Brondizio is Distinguished Professor of Anthropology at Indiana University Bloomington, directing the Center for the Analysis of Social-Ecological Landscapes (CASEL). He holds adjunct professorships in the Department of Geography and the School of Public and Environmental Affairs, and serves as faculty associate for the Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies, Individualized Major Program, Native Studies Program, and Food Studies Program. Brondizio is External Professor at the University of Campinas Center for Environmental Studies and Research (NEPAM) in Brazil and Co-Editor-in-Chief of Global Environmental Change: Human and Policy Dimensions, published by Elsevier. His career encompasses service on international scientific bodies, including the Science Committee of the International Geosphere Biosphere Program (now Future Earth), co-chairing the 2019 IPBES Global Assessment of Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services with Sandra Díaz and Josef Settele, and contributions to assessments such as the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment, UNEP Global Environmental Outlook-4, Economics of Ecosystems and Biodiversity, and Global Forest Expert Panels.

Brondizio developed a research program in environmental anthropology focused on Amazonian rural and urban populations, landscapes, and interactions with commodity markets, development policies, social movements, and climate change. His interests include land use and landscape history, institutions and collective action, household economy and demographics, livelihoods and poverty, local ecological knowledge, people-forest interactions, social-ecological systems, global environmental change, and sustainability sciences. He earned a Ph.D. with concentrations in Environmental Sciences and Anthropology from Indiana University in 1996, post-doctoral studies at the University of Arizona (1996-1997), a Certificate in Remote Sensing from Brazil's National Institute for Space Research (1987-1988), and a degree in Agronomic Engineering from Universidade de Taubaté (1982-1987). Key publications are The Amazonian Caboclo and the Açaí Palm: Forest Farmers in the Global Market (2008; 2017 e-book), Human-Environment Interactions: Current and Future Directions (2013, co-edited with Emilio F. Moran), Rethinking Environmentalism: Linking Justice, Sustainability and Diversity (2018, co-edited), and The Amazon Várzea: The Decade Past and the Decade Ahead (2010, co-edited). Honors include the 2025 Tyler Prize for the Environment, 2023 Volvo Environment Prize, 2010 Mary W. Klinger Book Award, election to the National Academy of Sciences, American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and Academie d'Agriculture de France.
