Dr Eifion Jewell is an Associate Professor in Mechanical Engineering and Head of the Mechanical Engineering Department in the School of Aerospace, Civil, Electrical, and Mechanical Engineering at Swansea University. He earned a BEng and a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from Swansea University. His professional career commenced with several years as a post-doctoral researcher at the Welsh Centre for Printing and Coating (WCPC). In 2011, he joined the SPECIFIC Innovation and Knowledge Centre (IKC), initially managing pilot coating processes, and progressed to Director, with responsibilities for transforming laboratory science into manufacturable energy technologies for the built environment, including serving as Industrial Coatings Research Lead. Appointed to the academic staff in 2015, he acts as Mechanical Engineering Portfolio Director, overseeing the development of BEng and Masters programmes. Additionally, he is Theme Lead for Smart, Sustainable Design and Manufacturing and a Coleg Cenedlaethol Cymraeg Lecturer since 2015, delivering engineering classes through the medium of Welsh. He leads an active research group of staff and postgraduate students and is available for postgraduate supervision.
Jewell specializes in printing and coating processes and materials, coating characterization techniques, printed electronics at scale, and thermochemical heat storage materials. His research emphasizes sustainable coatings for steel substrates, printed electronics, photovoltaics such as perovskite solar cells, addressing manufacturing challenges, material interfaces, failure mechanisms, and environmental lifetime performance. He has authored over 100 international journal and conference papers. Key publications include: "Photonic sintering of copper for rapid processing of thick film conducting circuits on FTO coated glass" (Scientific Reports, 2023); "Optimisation of CaCl2 impregnated expanded graphite and alginate matrices – Targeted salt loading" (Energy Conversion and Management, 2024); "Development and characterisation of an alginate and expanded graphite based composite for thermochemical heat storage" (Journal of Materials Science, 2023); "Enhancing the Performance of the Mesoporous TiO2 Film in Printed Perovskite Photovoltaics through High-Speed Imaging and Ink Rheology Techniques" (Advanced Functional Materials, 2024); "Design of a Chipless RFID Tag to Monitor the Performance of Organic Coatings on Architectural Cladding" (Sensors, 2022); and "Improving the Processability of a One-Step Hydrophobic Coating for Hot-Dipped Galvanised Steel for Industrial Applications" (Coatings, 2022).
