Amar Abd El-Sallam is an Adjunct Senior Research Fellow in the School of Physics, Mathematics and Computing, specifically in Computer Science and Software Engineering, at the University of Western Australia. He also contributes to the UWA Tech & Policy Lab. He earned his PhD in Telecommunications from Curtin University in 2006, following a Master of Science in Electrical, Electronics and Communication Engineering in 1998 and a Bachelor of Science in the same field in 1995, both from Assiut University, Egypt. His academic and professional career spans over 20 years, beginning as a Telecommunications and Signal Processing Engineer in 1996-1997, followed by roles as Tutor, Lab Demonstrator, Lecturer, and Projects Supervisor at Assiut University's Electrical Engineering Department from 1997-2001. He then pursued his PhD at Curtin University, serving as Research Assistant, Lecturer, Tutor, and Laboratory Demonstrator from 2005-2006. Post-PhD, he held a Postdoctoral Research Fellowship at the Western Australia Telecommunication Research Institute in 2006-2007, followed by Postdoctoral Research Fellowships at UWA's School of Electrical, Electronic and Computer Engineering and School of Computer Science & Software Engineering from 2008-2010. He advanced to Research Assistant Professor in UWA's School of Computer Science & Software Engineering from 2009-2013 and School of Sport Science, Exercise and Health from 2014-2015, alongside Senior Research Fellow roles with Swimming Australia and the WA Institute of Sports in 2014-2015. In industry, he has been CTO and CEO Co-Founder of Advanced Quantum Human Biomechanics, Chief Technology Engineer at AGJA Pty Ltd, Chief Research Engineer at Advanced Health Intelligence (2022-2023), and Chief Science Officer at Advanced Human Imaging (2014-2022), where he was a key personnel and Co-founder of ShrinkMe Pty Ltd.
El-Sallam's research focuses on data collection, analysis, and modeling; signal, speech, and image processing; wave propagation; electronics; telecommunications; computer vision; machine learning; sport science, exercise, and health; and digital human models for applications in mHealth, assisting individuals with disabilities, and performance optimization. He has authored over 70 refereed scientific publications as first author and numerous others as co-author, along with over 25 patents. Key publications include 'Longitudinal concordance of body composition and anthropometric assessment by a novel smartphone application across a 12-week self-managed weight loss intervention' (2023), 'Predicting ground reaction forces from 2D video: Bridging the lab to field nexus' (2021), 'DXA reference values and anthropometric screening for visceral obesity in Western Australian adults' (2020), 'A simple but reliable method for measuring 3D Achilles tendon moment arm geometry from a single, static magnetic resonance scan' (2017), and 'Can participant specific segment inertial parameters improve the validity of musculoskeletal models for forward dynamic simulations during sidestepping?' (2017). He has secured research grants including NHMRC Near-miss WANMA Awards of $100K in 2023 and 2020, and approximately $US500,000 in 2018/19. El-Sallam has supervised Honours, Masters, and PhD students and developed markerless human movement analysis systems for major sports organizations like Swimming Australia and the Australian Institute of Sports.
