Associate Professor Elham Doroodchi holds the position of Associate Professor in the School of Engineering at the University of Newcastle. She completed her Bachelor of Engineering in Chemical Engineering with First Class Honours and the University Medal at the University of Newcastle, prior to commencing her PhD studies there in 2001, awarded in October 2005 with an APA Postgraduate Scholarship. Additional honors during her studies include the Newcastle University Dean's Medal (2000), Institution of Chemical Engineers Prize (2000), and Dean's Merit List (1998-2000). She held a Visiting Postgraduate Fellowship at Vienna University of Technology in 2004. Post-PhD, Doroodchi was a Research Fellow in Chemical Engineering, followed by a prestigious University of Newcastle Research Fellowship (2007-2013). She has advanced to Associate Professor, securing $2.9 million in collaborative research funding, and served as an ARC International Reader in 2015. The Australian Research Council recognizes her as an expert of international standing.
Doroodchi's research centers on fluid mechanics and particle technology, emphasizing multiphase systems, fluidized bed hydrodynamics, and dynamics of particles, droplets, and bubbles. Her work integrates particle image velocimetry, other experimental techniques, and CFD modeling to elucidate phase interactions for designing industrial equipment like classifiers, separators, and mixers, extending to microfluidics and energy technologies including geothermal electricity generation and waste heat desalination. She co-developed the commercialized Reflux Classifier, recipient of a 2005 National Award from the Business/Higher Education Round Table. With 122 publications and over 6,400 Google Scholar citations, prominent papers include "Influence of void fraction calculation on fidelity of CFD-DEM simulation of gas-solid bubbling fluidized beds" (AIChE Journal, 2014; 389 citations), "Effects of surfactant on stability and thermo-physical properties of metal oxide nanofluids" (International Journal of Heat and Mass Transfer, 2016; 301 citations), and "Effect of magnetic field on laminar convective heat transfer of magnetite nanofluids" (2014; 294 citations). She contributes to centres on critical minerals, energy, and leads renewable energy themes.
