About Ella

Professor Ella Pereira is Professor of Computing in the Department of Computer Science at Edge Hill University. She holds a PhD in Distributed Systems from Liverpool John Moores University, awarded on 10 April 2006, an MSc in Computer Systems from Georgian Technical University (1998–2000), and a BSc in Mechanical Engineering (CAD/CAM) from the same institution (1993–1997). Joining Edge Hill University in 2005 and promoted to Professor in 2015, she serves as Director of Research within the department, Chair of the Departmental Equality and Diversity Committee, and is affiliated with the Health Research Institute, Data and Complex Systems Research Centre, Research Centre for Arts and Wellbeing, and Visual Computing Lab. Professor Pereira accepts PhD students and focuses her career on distributed systems, data and complex systems, visual computing, and health technology applications.

Her research specializations encompass the Internet of Medical Things (IoMT), fog clustering and resource optimization, machine learning for cognitive impairment detection and diagnosis in Parkinson’s disease, hydration monitoring with wearable sensors, mental health support systems for children and young people, and clinical tools like automated facial assessment for cleft lip outcomes. As Principal Investigator, she directed TechUp (2019–2021) and BEC Systems Integration (2019–2021); as Co-Investigator, she contributed to Creating a 3D Parametric Modelling Community Environment (2017–2018), Assisted Living Technology reviews (2014–2015), and Virtual Arts Companionship for dementia (2014–2016). Key publications include "Machine learning for the detection and diagnosis of cognitive impairment in Parkinson’s Disease: a systematic review" (PLoS ONE, 2024), "A Review of the State of the Art for the Internet of Medical Things" (Sci, 2025), "Towards Data-Driven Hydration Monitoring: Insights from Wearable Sensors and Advanced Machine Learning Techniques" (Electronics, 2024), "Critical analysis of resource sharing and optimization in fog clustering" (IEEE Conference, 2024), and "The digital platform assessment matrix: developing a framework for evaluating digital platforms and systems for children and young people’s mental health support" (Mental Health and Digital Technologies, 2026).
