About Ellis

Dr. Ellis Horowitz is Professor Emeritus of Computer Science in the Thomas Lord Department of Computer Science and Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering in the Ming Hsieh Department at the University of Southern California. He received his B.S. degree from Brooklyn College and his Ph.D. in computer science from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Earlier in his career, he held faculty positions at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and Cornell University, and served as a visiting professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology. He also acted as Associate Chairman of the Computer Science Department at the University of Wisconsin. At USC, Dr. Horowitz chaired the Computer Science Department from 1990 to 1999. Following that, he was appointed Director of Information Technology and Distance Education in the Viterbi School of Engineering, where he managed the Distance Education Network (DEN). Under his leadership, DEN transitioned from satellite broadcasts to Internet webcasting, delivering over 200 graduate engineering courses annually to more than 1,000 students.

Dr. Horowitz's research specializations include software development, software engineering, the World Wide Web and Internet, search engines, the deep web, and collaboration. He has authored ten books and over eighty journal articles and refereed conference papers on topics such as data structures, algorithms, software design, and computer science education. Key publications include Fundamentals of Data Structures (1976, with Sartaj Sahni), Fundamentals of Computer Algorithms (1984, with Sartaj Sahni), Fundamentals of Data Structures in Turbo Pascal (1989, with Sartaj Sahni), Computer Algorithms/C++ (1997, with Sartaj Sahni and Sanguthevar Rajasekaran), and Fundamentals of Data Structures in C (2007, second edition, with Sartaj Sahni and Susan Anderson-Freed). As principal investigator, he secured research contracts from NSF, AFOSR, ONR, and DARPA. He served as associate editor for Communications of the ACM and Transactions on Mathematical Software, and was an IBM Scholar from 1989 to 1993. Dr. Horowitz received the 2000 R1edu.org Outstanding Distance Education Educator award. He founded and served as CEO of Quality Software Products from 1983 to 1993, developing UNIX application software, and has consulted on intellectual property cases including Yahoo v. Google, RIAA v. Kazaa, and RIAA v. LimeWire.
