Emanuela Gionfriddo is an Associate Professor in the Department of Chemistry at the University at Buffalo, where she joined in 2023. She earned her PhD in Analytical Chemistry from the University of Calabria in Italy in 2013, following an MSc in Chemistry in 2010 and a BSc in Chemistry in 2008 from the same institution. Gionfriddo conducted postdoctoral research as a Postdoctoral Fellow from 2014 to 2017 and Research Associate in 2017 at the University of Waterloo in Canada. Prior to UB, she held positions at the University of Toledo, advancing from Assistant Professor from 2018 to 2023 to Associate Professor in 2023. Her research focuses on analytical chemistry, particularly analytical separations, microextraction technologies, bioanalytical chemistry, and the fate and transport of emerging contaminants such as PFAS in environmental and biological systems. The Gionfriddo laboratory, known as the Green Microextraction Analytical Solutions (GMAS) Lab, develops miniaturized extraction methods like solid-phase microextraction coupled to chromatography and mass spectrometry for preconcentration, detection, and quantification of micropollutants at ultra-trace levels, addressing links between environmental contamination and exposure in humans and wildlife.
Gionfriddo has garnered significant recognition for her contributions, including the National Science Foundation CAREER Award in 2022, the 2024 Chinese American Chromatography Association Young Investigator Award, the 2023 Eastern Analytical Symposium Young Investigator Award, the 2023 LCGC Emerging Leader in Chromatography Award, and the 2022 Satinder Ahuja Award for Young Investigators in Separation Science from the American Chemical Society. Her influential publications include 'Enhancing Quantitative Analysis of Xenobiotics in Blood Plasma through Cross-Matrix Calibration and Bayesian Hierarchical Modeling' (ACS Measurement Science Au, 2023), 'Rapid Screening and Quantification of PFAS Enabled by SPME-DART-MS' (Journal of the American Society for Mass Spectrometry, 2023), 'Matrix Effects Demystified: Strategies for Resolving Challenges in Analytical Separations of Complex Samples' (Journal of Separation Science, 2023), and 'Investigation of the Adsorption/Desorption Mechanism of Perfluoroalkyl Substances on HLB-WAX Extraction Phases for Microextraction' (Analytica Chimica Acta, 2023). She holds leadership roles such as Chair-Elect of the Analytical Chemistry Subdivision on Chromatography and Separation Chemistry of the American Chemical Society, and serves on the Editorial Advisory Boards of Analytica Chimica Acta, Analytical and Bioanalytical Chemistry, Green Analytical Chemistry, and Advances in Sample Preparation.
