Amalie Emmy Noether was a German mathematician who made foundational contributions to abstract algebra and mathematical physics. Born in 1882 in Erlangen, she earned a doctorate from the University of Erlangen–Nuremberg in 1907 under Paul Gordan. She worked without pay at the Mathematical Institute in Erlangen before moving to the University of Göttingen in 1915 at the invitation of David Hilbert and Felix Klein. Her habilitation was approved in 1919, after which she lectured as a Privatdozent. In 1933, following dismissal from her position due to Nazi policies, she joined Bryn Mawr College in Pennsylvania, where she taught graduate students, and lectured at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton until her death in 1935.
Noether received the Ackermann–Teubner Memorial Award in 1932. Her research is often divided into three periods: early work on algebraic invariants and number fields, including the 1918 paper presenting Noether's theorem on symmetries and conservation laws; the 1920s development of ideal theory in commutative rings, highlighted by her 1921 paper Idealtheorie in Ringbereichen, which introduced concepts now known as Noetherian rings; and later work on noncommutative algebras and module theory from 1927 onward. Her ideas influenced students including B. L. van der Waerden, whose textbook Moderne Algebra incorporated her contributions, and shaped modern abstract algebra, ring theory, and theoretical physics. She served on the editorial board of Mathematische Annalen and delivered a plenary address at the 1932 International Congress of Mathematicians.
