About Eng Hin

Eng Hin Lee is Emeritus Professor in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore. He holds an MD from the University of Western Ontario (1973) and completed residency training in Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Toronto Teaching Hospitals, obtaining his FRCS(C) in 1982. He subsequently completed a fellowship in Paediatric Orthopaedics at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto in 1983. His qualifications also include FRCS (Edin), FRCS (Glas), and FAMS (Sing). Prof Lee previously served as Head of the Department of Orthopaedics at NUS and as Dean of the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine. He is currently Emeritus Consultant in the Division of Paediatric Orthopaedics at the National University Hospital and holds senior consultant and committee roles with the Ministry of Health, including Chairman of the Bioethics Advisory Committee and President of the Disciplinary Commission.

Prof Lee specialises in the management of orthopaedic problems in children, with particular interests in hip dysplasia, foot and spinal deformities, limb length discrepancies, and neuromuscular disorders. His research focuses on tissue engineering and regenerative medicine, including the use of mesenchymal stem cells and chondrocytes for treating partial growth arrest and articular cartilage defects. He has authored over 160 scientific articles and 32 book chapters, co-edited a textbook on stem cells, and serves as Deputy Editor of the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery and in editorial roles for several other journals. He has received multiple public service awards, including the Public Service Medal and the Public Administration (Silver) Medal, as well as research excellence awards and the 2019 Fellowship of International Orthopaedic Research. Prof Lee remains actively involved in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching at NUS.
