Eric Belin de Chantemele, DSc, serves as Regents' Professor and Leon Henri Charbonnier Endowed Chair at Augusta University's Medical College of Georgia. He holds the position of Professor in the Department of Medicine and Department of Physiology, while also acting as Associate Director of the Vascular Biology Center and Director of the Vascular Biology Center Graduate Program. His academic background includes a D.Sc. in Cardiovascular Physiology from University Claude Bernard Lyon I, France, in 2005; an M.Sc. in Integrative Physiology from the University of Lyon, University Claude Bernard Lyon I, in 2002; and a B.S. in Cellular Biology and Physiology from University Claude Bernard Lyon I in 2000. Belin de Chantemele contributes to graduate education by teaching courses such as BIOM 8033 Integrated Systems Biology, BIOM 8060 Introduction to Research II, VBIO 8010 Methods in Cardiovascular Research, VBIO 9010 Seminar in Vascular Biology, VBIO 9210 Investigation of a Problem, VBIO 9300 Research in Vascular Biology, and BIOM 8130 Scientific Grant Writing.
The research in the Belin de Chantemele Lab examines the mechanisms of cardiovascular complications linked to HIV and metabolic disorders, including hypertension, endothelial dysfunction, accelerated aging of bone and muscle, neuroinflammation, sympatho-activation, and salt sensitivity of blood pressure. Key investigations involve HIV-derived proteins inducing hypertension through T-cell-dependent mechanisms in the Tg26 mouse model, the role of adrenal zona glomerulosa leptin receptor in protecting against leptin-mediated vascular disorders in female mice, and sex-specific hypertension mechanisms in obesity. Notable publications include "NADPH oxidase 1 promotes hepatic steatosis in obese mice and is abrogated by augmented skeletal muscle mass" (2024), "Type 1 Diabetes Impairs Endothelium-Dependent Relaxation Via Increasing Endothelial Cell Glycolysis Through Advanced Glycation End Products, PFKFB3, and Nox1-Mediated Mechanisms" (2023), "The kynurenine pathway in HIV, frailty and inflammaging" (2023), "Early Endothelial Dysfunction in a Novel Model of Sustained Hyperphagia and Obesity in Mice Using a Brain Targeting Adeno-Associated Virus" (2023), and "Perivascular adipose tissue promotes vascular dysfunction in murine lupus" (2023). He has earned prestigious awards such as Fellow of the Cardiovascular Section of the American Physiological Society (2025), Medical College of Georgia Faculty Senate Mentoring Excellence Award (2024), American Physiological Society Charles Bates Research Award (2023), Augusta University Graduate School Distinguished Mentor Award (2023), American Physiological Society Henry Pickering Bowditch Award (2021), and American Heart Association Established Investigator Award (2019). Belin de Chantemele provides extensive service as Chair of the Vascular Biology Center Faculty Search Committee, member of the Augusta University Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee and Promotion and Tenure Committee, and editorial review board member for Pharmacological Research. His mentorship excellence is evidenced by awards and the successes of lab trainees securing NIH, AHA, and ADA fellowships.
