Rate My Professor Eric Hoek

Eric Hoek is a professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of California, Los Angeles. He holds a Ph.D. from Yale University awarded in 2002, an M.S. from Yale University awarded in 1999, an M.S. from the University of California, Los Angeles awarded in 1996, and a B.S. from Pennsylvania State University awarded in 1995. His research focuses on membrane materials and processes, nanoscience and nanotechnology, interfacial science and engineering, bacterial adhesion and biofilm formation, desalination, and advanced water treatment. He serves as Faculty Director of the UCLA Sustainable LA Grand Challenge and maintains affiliations with the Institute of the Environment and Sustainability and the California NanoSystems Institute. Hoek also holds a position as faculty scientist at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.

Hoek leads the UCLA Nanomaterials and Membrane Technology Research Laboratory. He has advised more than 50 graduate students, authored over 110 peer-reviewed publications, and filed more than 70 patents globally. He has written books including Sustainable Desalination and Water Reuse and Oil and Gas Produced Water Management. He is co-editor in chief of The Encyclopedia of Membrane Science, founding and current editor-in-chief of npj Clean Water, and a former associate editor of Desalination. His awards include the 2022 Athalie Richardson Irvine Clarke Prize from the National Water Research Institute, the 2023 UCLA Samueli University Service Award, and the 2011 ASCE Walter L. Huber Award for Achievements in Civil Engineering Research. Hoek has co-founded technology companies such as NanoH2O, Water Planet, PolyCera, and IntelliFlux, and has consulted for government agencies, companies, investment funds, and law firms.
