Eric de Camargo Smidt is a professor at Universidade Federal do Paraná in the field of Biological Sciences. He holds a bachelor's degree in Biological Sciences from Universidade Estadual Paulista Júlio de Mesquita Filho obtained in 2000, a master's degree in Botany from Universidade Estadual de Feira de Santana obtained in 2003, and a doctorate in Botany from the same institution obtained in 2007. He completed postdoctoral research at the Instituto de Botânica in São Paulo and at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew in the United Kingdom.
At Universidade Federal do Paraná, Smidt serves in the position of Angiosperm Phylogeny. He has held roles as coordinator and vice-coordinator of the Graduate Program in Botany and acts as a permanent advisor in that program as well as in related programs at other institutions. His work centers on botany with emphasis on the taxonomy of Orchidaceae, including phylogeny, taxonomy, biogeography, and pollination.
