Ernest Mnkandla is a full professor at the University of South Africa. He holds an honours degree in electrical engineering awarded in 1992, an MSc in computer science awarded in 1997, a PhD in electrical engineering awarded in 2008, and a master’s degree in open and distance learning awarded in 2016. He serves as Head of the Centre for Augmented Intelligence and Data Science at the University of South Africa and has previously held the position of Director of the School of Computing at the same institution. Earlier in his career he was a Senior Lecturer at the University of Johannesburg. His research centres on software engineering and artificial intelligence, with a particular emphasis on improving software quality in development projects through the application of contemporary technologies and environments such as those associated with the Fourth Industrial Revolution. He maintains an NRF C2 rating for the period 2020–2025. Mnkandla has supervised sixteen PhD students and twenty-eight master’s students to completion and has mentored four postdoctoral fellows. He has contributed to academic citizenship through roles on programme review panels, research ethics committees, and conference leadership, and has served as guest editor for an MDPI journal. Key publications include the 2017 paper “The Use of Social Media in E-Learning: A Metasynthesis,” the 2006 paper “Defining agile software quality assurance,” and the 2017 paper “Modelling the critical success factors of agile software development projects in South Africa.”
