About Estelle

Estelle Martin is an Assistant Professor of Invertebrate Vectors of Disease and Public Health in the Department of Entomology and Nematology at the University of Florida, contributing to Agricultural and Veterinary Science through her expertise in medical and veterinary entomology. She received her Ph.D. in Arbovirology from Université Pierre et Marie Curie (Paris VI), France, in 2010, following her M.S. in Biology and Physiology of Invertebrates in 2005 and B.S. in Parasitology in 2000 from the same university. Her doctoral research was conducted at the Institut Pasteur in Paris under the mentorship of Dr. Anna-Bella Failloux and Dr. Michèle Bouloy. Prior to her current role, Martin held a Postdoctoral Research Associate position in the Department of Entomology at Texas A&M University starting in April 2016, and a Postdoctoral Fellowship in the Department of Tropical Medicine at the John A. Burns School of Medicine, University of Hawaii at Manoa, from May 2011 to May 2015. Earlier experiences include a graduate student role at Institut Pasteur from 2007 to 2010 and master student internships at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory in 2005 and Institut Pasteur in 2004.

Martin's research centers on arthropod-borne viruses, mosquito-virus interactions, virus evolution, mosquito immune responses to infections, fitness costs associated with viral infections, and applied strategies for vector control to mitigate public health risks from emerging mosquito-borne diseases. Her publications include 'Culex erraticus (Diptera: Culicidae) utilizes gopher tortoise burrows as larval habitat in North Florida' (Journal of Medical Entomology, 2024), 'A field study to manage Aedes aegypti and Culex quinquefasciatus larvae using spinosad-based bait stations in south Texas' (Journal of Medical Entomology, 2024), 'Cell fusing agent virus (Flavivirus) infection in Aedes aegypti in Texas' (Archives of Virology, 2020), 'Domestic Dogs as Sentinels for West Nile Virus but not Aedes-borne Flaviviruses, South Texas' (Emerging Infectious Diseases, 2022), and 'Sugar Feeding Patterns for Aedes aegypti and Culex quinquefasciatus (Diptera: Culicidae) Mosquitoes in South Texas' (Journal of Medical Entomology, 2020). She teaches 'Identification of Insects and other Arthropods of Medical and Veterinary Importance' and has instructed courses on principles of medical parasitology and methods in vector-borne diseases. Martin has participated in funded projects such as the CDC Vector-Borne Disease Regional Centers of Excellence (2016-2021), NIH K01 award (2017-2020), and others focused on arbovirus diagnostics and mosquito control. She serves as a peer reviewer for PLOS Pathogens, PLOS Neglected Tropical Diseases, and PLOS One, and is a member of the American Society for Tropical Medicine and Hygiene.
