Ester Cerdeira Sabino serves as Full Professor in the Department of Pathology at the Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de São Paulo. She obtained her medical degree from the Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de São Paulo in 1984 and earned a PhD in Immunology from the same institution. Sabino has held the position of Director of the Instituto de Medicina Tropical da USP from 2015 to 2019 and also serves as a professor at the USCS School of Medicine.
Her primary research areas include transfusion safety, HIV, Chagas disease, emerging viruses, and sickle cell anemia. She contributed to the rapid genomic sequencing of SARS-CoV-2 in Brazil as part of a Brazilian research team. Sabino is a full member of the Academia Brasileira de Ciências and has received the Medalha Armando Salles de Oliveira from the Universidade de São Paulo as well as the 2026 TWAS Prize in Medical Health Sciences. She acts as principal investigator for NIH-supported programs including the Recipient Epidemiology and Donor Evaluation Study-IV Pediatric and the São Paulo-Minas Gerais Neglected Tropical Disease Research Center for Biomarker Discovery.
