About Ethan

Ethan Bier is a Distinguished Professor in the Department of Cell and Developmental Biology at the University of California, San Diego. He received his Ph.D. from Harvard University and graduated Phi Beta Kappa as a Regents Scholar from UCSD in 1978. His research focuses on developmental patterning, particularly BMP signaling in Drosophila embryos and wing vein formation, as well as using Drosophila as a model to study mechanisms of human disease processes. Bier has contributed to understanding conserved mechanisms in neural induction and patterning of the central nervous system. He also works on active genetics and gene drive technologies.

Bier serves as science director of TIGS-UC San Diego. He has received the Sloan Foundation Award, the McKnight Award for Neuroscience, the Basil O'Connor Award, the American Cancer Society Junior Faculty Award, and was named an Allen Distinguished Investigator in 2016. Key publications include work on the short gastrulation (sog) gene and its homology to chordin (1994-1995), studies on BMP activity gradients (2005), and applications of Drosophila to human genetics and disease modeling (2005). His work has advanced knowledge in developmental biology and potential applications in genetic engineering.
