About Eugene

Professor Emeritus Eugene Seneta holds a position in the School of Mathematics and Statistics within the Faculty of Science at the University of Sydney. Born in 1941 in western Ukraine, he arrived in Australia in 1949 and settled in Adelaide, where he completed his MSc at the University of Adelaide. In 1965, he moved to Canberra to pursue his PhD at the Australian National University, awarded in the late 1960s. Seneta was appointed Professor at the University of Sydney in 1979, a role he maintained until retirement, becoming Professor Emeritus. He continued teaching until mid-2019, delivering courses in Time Series Analysis and first-year Statistics. His academic career also includes supervision of PhD students such as Thomas Fung, Simon Ku, and Ross Maller at the University of Sydney.

Seneta's research focuses on probability theory, probability modelling, and associated classical analysis, particularly discrete branching processes, finite Markov chains, non-negative matrices, and growth theory. He is a leading authority on the history of probability and statistics, with contributions including applications of stochastic processes to population genetics. Major publications encompass the influential book Non-negative Matrices and Markov Chains (Springer, 1981, second edition), Regularly Varying Functions (Springer, 1976; second edition 1985), and I.J. Bienaymé: Statistical Theory Anticipated (Springer, 1977). He co-edited Statisticians of the Centuries (2001) and authored papers such as 'Lewis Carroll as a Probabilist and Mathematician' (1984), 'Markov and the Creation of Markov Chains' (2006), and works on the variance-gamma process in financial modelling (1990). Seneta's honors include election as Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science in 1985, the Pitman Medal from the Statistical Society of Australia in 1998, and the Hannan Medal in Statistical Science from the Australian Academy of Science in 2007. His scholarly impact is evident in extensive citations and recognition in probability theory.
