Eun-Young Shin is Dean and Professor in the Department of Fashion Sociology, Faculty of Fashion, at Bunka Gakuen University. She graduated from the Design Course at Bunka Fashion College. She then studied at Bunka Women's University, Faculty of Home Economics, Department of Clothing, before completing graduate studies at the university's graduate school (now Bunka Gakuen University Graduate School). Shin earned a PhD in Clothing Environment Studies, Home Economics Research Course, Clothing Environment Studies Major, with a doctoral thesis on clothing behavior using social behavior theory. During her design-related work experience, she developed an interest in consumer behavior.
Shin joined the faculty at Bunka Gakuen University after obtaining her PhD and served as Visiting Professor at the University of Delaware, Department of Fashion and Apparel Studies, in 2009. Her research specializations include sociological and psycho-social approaches to clothing behavior, consumer behavior analysis, and the influence of consumer consciousness on fashion purchasing decisions. Key publications include co-authored works such as 'The Relationship Between Political Status and Fashion Behavior in Contemporary China: A Comparative Study of Communist Party Members and Non-Members' (Fashion Theory, 2025, with Yongli Hao), 'A study on fashion street in Beijing - Through street fashion and its images' (Journal of Advanced Research in Social Sciences and Humanities, Vol. 5, Issue 5, 2020, with Yongli Hao), 'Influence of design, workmanship, and familiarity on perceptions of country-of-origin apparel brands: A study of consumers in the US, China and Japan' (Journal of Global Fashion Marketing, Vol. 6, No. 4, 2015, with H.S. Kim et al.), contributions to Berg Encyclopedia of World Dress and Fashion, East Asia volume (Berg Publishers, 2010), and '服飾のアイテム' (Kyugchun Publisher, Korea, 2006). She received the Outstanding Paper Award (Oral Presentation Category) for 'The Formation of the Image of Emperor Meiji as Seen in Gyofuku' at the 2023 International Costume Conference, Korean Society of Costume (with Atsushi Tanaka). Shin delivered a special lecture 'On Korean and Japanese Costume Culture' for the 50th Anniversary of Japan-Korea Diplomatic Normalization (2015) and contributed to a 2007 Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology commissioned research on accreditation of fashion-related higher education institutions overseas. She is affiliated with the Japan Sociological Society, Fashion Business Society, Korean Society of Clothing and Textiles, and International Textile and Apparel Association. Shin supervises graduate students in clothing sociology on topics including street fashion, consumption behavior, and modern fashion networks.
