Dr Eve Smith is an NIHR Academic Clinical Lecturer in Women's and Children's Health within the Institute of Life Course and Medical Sciences at the University of Liverpool, part of the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences. She completed her undergraduate training, earning a BSc and MBChB, at the University of Edinburgh in 2005. Her postgraduate training in paediatrics began in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, and in 2013 she relocated to Liverpool to pursue her PhD under Professor Michael Beresford, focusing on developing a urinary biomarker panel for lupus nephritis in children as part of the UK's Experimental Arthritis Treatment Centre for Children. Smith's career includes supervisory roles for local, national, and international undergraduate and postgraduate students, alongside clinical work affiliated with Alder Hey Children's NHS Foundation Trust.
Her research centers on paediatric rheumatology, with a specialization in childhood-onset systemic lupus erythematosus (cSLE) and juvenile-onset systemic lupus erythematosus (JSLE), including urine biomarkers for lupus nephritis, treat-to-target strategies, and international registries. She leads the TARGET LUPUS programme, co-chairs the Paediatric Rheumatology European Society (PReS) SLE Working Party Research Section and the UK JSLE Topic Specific Group, and serves as co-Principal Investigator on PReS/CARRA-funded studies. Notable achievements include developing and internationally validating a urinary biomarker panel that identifies active lupus nephritis, predicts flares and remission, and informs rituximab response. Key publications encompass 'Attainment of low disease activity and remission targets reduces the risk of severe flare and new damage in childhood lupus' (Rheumatology, 2022), 'A Panel of Urinary Proteins Predicts Active Lupus Nephritis and Response to Rituximab Treatment' (Arthritis & Rheumatology, 2020), and 'International validation of a urinary biomarker panel for identification of active lupus nephritis in children' (Pediatric Nephrology, 2017). Awards include the Medical Research Foundation Emerging Leaders Prize (joint first prize, 2022, £100,000), Merck Millipore MAGPIX Grant (2014), and MRC Confidence in Concept grant. She contributes to committees such as the University of Liverpool Institute of Life Course and Medical Sciences Ethics Committee and Clinical Academic Committee, and supports initiatives like World Young Rheumatic Diseases Day.
