About Faisal

Faisal Abdulla AlMarzooqi is an Associate Professor of Chemical Engineering at Khalifa University, where he also serves as Acting Deputy Director in the Department of Chemical and Petroleum Engineering and Deputy Director of the Center of Membrane and Advanced Water Technology (CMAT). He earned his PhD in Interdisciplinary Engineering from the joint Masdar Institute and Massachusetts Institute of Technology program in 2015, with research focused on the interplay of membrane fabrication and nanotechnology in water desalination. He obtained his MSc in Chemical Engineering from Imperial College London in 2009, where his work on ionic liquids for determining surface energies earned him the Lonza award. Prior to his faculty appointment, he was the first UAE national to complete a PhD at Masdar Institute.

AlMarzooqi’s research centers on membranes and devices for solar water treatment and energy applications, including desalination, wastewater treatment, valuable metals recovery, hydrogen generation, and batteries. His interests encompass solar desalination, membrane distillation, solar wastewater treatment, 2D materials, and waste-to-fuel processes. He is an Editorial Board Member of the Desalination journal by Elsevier. In 2015, he received the UAE Pioneer Award as the first UAE inventor of a water desalination technology based on nanotechnology. His professional email address is faisal.almarzooqi@ku.ac.ae.
