About Farhat

Farhat Yusuf, Honorary Professor of Public Health at the University of Sydney and Emeritus Professor of Demography at Macquarie University, had a distinguished career spanning over five decades in academia. He obtained his BSc Honours and MA in Statistics from the University of the Punjab in 1959 and 1961, respectively, followed by a PhD in Demography from the Australian National University in 1967. In 1970, he joined Macquarie University as a Senior Lecturer in the Faculty of Business and Economics, where he rose to full Professor, headed the Department of Business, served on the Academic Senate, and played a major role in developing the undergraduate program in Demography. He retired in 2011, earning Emeritus status and admission to the Roll of Honour in 2013. Concurrently, from 2010, he served as Honorary Professor at the Menzies Centre for Health Policy, University of Sydney, later associated with the Leeder Centre for Health Policy, Economics and Data. His visiting professorships included Princeton and Cornell Universities in the US, City University and the University of Southampton in the UK, and the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. He consulted for the UN Population Fund, UN Development Programme, and International Agency for Research on Cancer.

Professor Yusuf's academic interests encompassed demography, epidemiology, population health, health economics, women's health, fertility, mortality, and tobacco use. He co-authored four influential books: Demographic Techniques (1974, with Alf and Geoff Pollard), Consumer Demographics and Behaviour: Markets are People (2011, with Jo M. Martins and David A. Swanson), and Methods of Demographic Analysis (2014, with Martins and Swanson). His over 100 research papers and technical reports were published in leading journals including Population Research and Policy Review, Journal of Biosocial Science, Journal of Public Health, Australian and New Zealand Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, and the Medical Journal of Australia. Notable recent publications include "Trends in female sterilisations in New South Wales, 2010–2019" (2023), "Differences in tobacco smoking status in segments of the Australian population" (2021), "Recent estimates of the out-of-pocket expenditure on health care in Australia" (2020), and "Self-reported health experience of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in the 2021 Australian population census" (2025). A leader in the field, he chaired the International Union for the Scientific Study of Population's Scientific Panel on Business Demography (2007-2009) and was the first National President of the Australian Population Association. In 2015, he was awarded the Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for significant service to tertiary education as a specialist demographer.
