Rate My Professor Fawzi Banat

Professor Fawzi Banat is a Professor and Chair of the Chemical Engineering Department at Khalifa University in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, and serves as Center Director of the Food Security and Technology Center. He earned his PhD in chemical engineering from McGill University in Montreal, Canada, in 1995, along with an MSc in 1991 and a BSc in 1988 in chemical engineering from the University of Jordan in Amman, Jordan. Prior to joining Khalifa University, he held positions at Jordan University of Science and Technology, the University of Bahrain, German Jordanian University, and served as a visiting professor at McGill University.

Professor Banat has conducted pioneering research in desalination, food packaging, and biofuel upgradation, with particular contributions to membrane distillation, solar desalination, ultrafiltration, nanofiltration, food packaging films, gas aphrons, supercritical extraction, composites and nanocomposites, bifunctional catalysts, photodegradation, capacitive deionization, and electromagnetic separation processes. His work has resulted in more than 360 papers, over 120 conference presentations, several patents, and book chapters, accumulating more than 14,000 citations. He co-edited a book on algal biotechnology published by Elsevier and has supervised more than 50 MSc and PhD students as well as more than 10 postdoctoral fellows. Professor Banat has held administrative roles including department head, dean of research, dean of graduate studies, and acting dean of natural resources engineering at various institutions. He is a member of the Emirates Scientist Council, serves on editorial boards of several journals, and has been ranked among the top 2% of scientists worldwide by Stanford University in 2020 and 2021. His awards include the Distinguished University Professor in the Field of Scientific Research at the Khalifa Award for Education in 2014, the Shoman Prize for Young Arab Researchers in Engineering in 2000, the R&D Science Lantern Faculty Award by ADNOC in 2014, the best faculty award for teaching and research by Khalifa College in 2020, and the Jordanian Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research Award for Exceptional Researchers in Engineering in 2006.
