Felix Reed-Tsochas is Professor of Complex Systems at the Saïd Business School, University of Oxford. With an academic background in theoretical condensed matter physics, his research applies complex systems approaches to business, financial and social issues. This includes modelling interbank lending and potential contagion in financial markets, assessing the resilience of supply chains, and examining the effects of social media and mobile technologies on human behaviour and interactions. He serves as a Fellow of Green Templeton College, Director of the Complexity Economics Programme at INET Oxford, and founding Co-Director of the CABDyN Complexity Centre. Reed-Tsochas is also a member of the Department of Sociology and has contributed to doctoral training across Oxford’s Social Science Division.
His work addresses dynamic properties of large-scale networks, structural features in organisational and ecological systems, mechanisms of cooperation, network robustness and resilience, and the spread of innovations. Key projects include research on systemic risk management through the Oxford Martin Programme on Complexity, a Rockefeller Foundation initiative on resilience, and the European Commission-funded FOC project on forecasting financial crises. Recent publications include “Punctuated decline of human cooperation” in Nature (2026), “Able but Unwilling to Enforce: Cooperative Dilemmas in Group Lending” in the American Journal of Sociology (2020), and “Persistence of social signatures in human communication” in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (2014). He is Joint Series Editor of the World Scientific book series on Complex Systems and Interdisciplinary Science and has collaborated with institutions including the Bank of England, German Bundesbank, New York FED, and the European Central Bank.
