Dr. Feng Qiu is an Associate Professor in the Department of Resource Economics and Environmental Sociology within the Faculty of Agricultural, Life and Environmental Sciences at the University of Alberta. She earned her Ph.D. in Economics with a minor in Statistics from North Carolina State University in 2012, following an M.A. in Economics from the same university in 2006 and a B.A. in International Trade from Nanjing University of Finance and Economics in 2003. She joined the University of Alberta as Assistant Professor in August 2012 and was promoted to Associate Professor in July 2018. Her academic career builds on dissertation work titled 'Three Essays on Government Policy and Agricultural Markets,' advised by Barry K. Goodwin and J.P. Gervais.
Dr. Qiu's research concentrates on the supply chain of biofuel feedstock, energy policy and economics, land use and land use change, price and market analysis, community food environments, and economic and policy analysis of emerging technologies. She leads a research team at the University of Alberta focused on the economic and policy aspects of low-carbon energy transition and has published approximately 50 peer-reviewed journal articles. Key publications include 'Can community gardens and farmers' markets relieve food desert problems? A study of Edmonton, Canada' (Applied Geography, 2014), 'The role of socio-economic status and spatial effects on fresh food access: Two case studies in Canada' (Applied Geography, 2016), 'Assessing Neighbor and Population Growth Influences on Agricultural Land Conversion' (Applied Spatial Analysis and Policy, 2017), 'Price Volatility Spillovers along the Canadian Cattle Supply Chain' (Canadian Journal of Agricultural Economics, 2018), and 'Population growth and land development: Investigating the bi-directional interactions' (Ecological Economics, 2020). As principal investigator and co-investigator, she has secured over $2 million in research funding over the past six years, including roles in projects such as Future Energy Systems Research Institute ($700,000), Genome Canada for pork production sustainability ($4 million total), and Alberta Land Institute initiatives on farmland conversion and irrigation policy. Her excellence in teaching is evidenced by awards including the NACTA Teaching Award of Merit (2022), 2020-2021 ALES Teaching Hall of Fame, North American Colleges and Teachers of Agriculture recognition (2022), multiple NCSU teaching awards (2011), and the German Society of Economic and Social Sciences Best Paper Award (2013). Dr. Qiu serves as Editor for Agribusiness: An International Journal, Editorial Board Member for Canadian Journal of Agricultural Economics, and holds leadership roles in associations such as Western Agricultural Economics Association and Association of Chinese Canadian Professors.
