Dr. Fernando Lopez serves as the Department Chair of English and Communications at Miami Dade College North Campus, having assumed the role on January 13, 2020. In this position, he oversees the department's curriculum, faculty, and ongoing projects. Upon his appointment, Lopez expressed enthusiasm for the opportunity, stating, "I am most looking forward to collaborating with amazing faculty and staff on innovative and transformative projects that further demonstrate the reason why Miami Dade College is the place to be." The department offers diverse programs including English composition and literature, speech communications, mass communications and journalism, sign language interpretation, and speech pathology and audiology. These programs equip students with skills in critical thinking, analytical reading, effective articulation of ideas in writing and speaking, hands-on journalism experience through The Reporter newspaper and internships, and American Sign Language proficiency culminating in community internships.
Lopez earned a bachelor’s degree in mass communications from Trinity International University in 1996 and a master’s degree in educational leadership from Barry University in 2002. Prior to his current role at Miami Dade College, he served as program director of in-custody offender rehabilitation programming at South Bay Correctional Facility in Palm Beach County. He also acted as a chief collaborator on the District-Charter Collaboration Compacts for the Florida Department of Education, contributing to the pioneering of Florida's charter school movement. In 2024, Dr. Lopez received the Academic Affairs CARE Award for Collegiality, recognizing his collaborative efforts within the college community. He is listed as department chair in the AXIS creative arts magazine, an award-winning publication featuring student literary and artistic works from North Campus.
