Flávia Carla Meotti is Associate Professor in the Department of Biochemistry at the Institute of Chemistry, Universidade de São Paulo. She holds a bachelor's degree in Pharmacy Biochemistry from Universidade de Cruz Alta (2000), a master's degree in Biological Sciences (Toxicological Biochemistry) from Universidade Federal de Santa Maria (2002), and a PhD in Toxicological Biochemistry from the same institution (2006). She completed postdoctoral training in Biochemistry at the University of Otago, New Zealand (2008), and in Pharmacology at Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina (2010), followed by livre-docência at the Institute of Chemistry, USP (2018).
Her research investigates the mechanisms of oxidant species production during inflammatory reactions and their effects on cellular responses, with emphasis on enzymes such as NADPH oxidase and myeloperoxidase, as well as the oxidation of substrates including uric acid. These processes are linked to conditions such as atherosclerosis, neurodegenerative diseases, and cancer. Meotti has been affiliated with USP since 2011 and serves as Coordinator General of the Multicentric Postgraduate Program in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology of the Brazilian Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. She is a member of the RIDC Redoxoma and has received awards including the USP Mothers Researcher Award (2022) and the L'Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science Award (2009). Key publications include work on urate as a substrate for myeloperoxidase (Journal of Biological Chemistry, 2011) and chemical characterization of urate hydroperoxide (Chemical Research in Toxicology, 2015). Her work has garnered over 3,200 citations.
