About Francisco

Francisco Lopez-Jimenez, M.D., M.S., is a cardiologist, echocardiographer, and internist at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, where he serves as Chair of the Division of Preventive Cardiology and Professor of Medicine. He earned his M.D. from Leon School of Medicine at Guanajuato University in 1991, completed residency and internship at the National Institute of Internal Medicine and Nutrition Salvador Zubiran, and obtained a Master of Science in Clinical Epidemiology from Harvard School of Public Health in 1996. Additional training includes fellowships in cardiology at Mount Sinai Medical Center and advanced echocardiography at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School, along with an MBA from Augsburg University.

Dr. Lopez-Jimenez’s research focuses on obesity and cardiovascular disease, including physiologic studies on myocardial mechanics following weight loss, the limitations of body mass index, and the cardiometabolic effects of bariatric surgery. He is Co-Director of Artificial Intelligence in Cardiology at Mayo Clinic and conducts studies applying AI to detect heart disease. He previously served as Director of Research at the Dan Abraham Healthy Living Center and holds the Roderick H. Cushman Professor of Cardiovascular Sciences appointment. His honors include the Scientist Development Award from the American Heart Association, the Career Development Award in Preventive Cardiology from the American College of Cardiology, and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the University of Guanajuato. Dr. Lopez-Jimenez is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology and the American Heart Association, and he has contributed to numerous professional committees and editorial roles, including as Editor-in-Chief of Mayo Clinic Proceedings: Digital Health.
