Great Professor!
Professor Frank Martin AM is Clinical Professor in the Departments of Paediatrics and Child Health and Ophthalmology in the Medicine faculty at the University of Sydney. He specializes in paediatric ophthalmology and strabismus. He graduated with MB BS from the University of Sydney in 1966, obtained a Diploma in Ophthalmology from the same university in 1970, became FRANZCO in 1971, FRACS in 1975, and FRCO (UK). He completed fellowship training in paediatric ophthalmology at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia under Harold Scheie MD and David Schaffer MD.
Martin served as Head of the Department of Ophthalmology at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead for 22 years and as Visiting Medical Officer in Ophthalmology at Sydney Children’s Hospital from 1972, The Children’s Hospital at Westmead from 1973, Sydney Eye Hospital from 1972, Sydney Children’s Hospitals Network, Prince of Wales Hospital, and Royal Darwin Hospital from 2005 to 2020. A founding partner of Sydney Ophthalmic Specialists, he was Editor of the Australian and New Zealand Journal of Ophthalmology for 11 years and a reviewer for the British Journal of Ophthalmology. His leadership includes President of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists from 1996 to 1997, President of the Asia Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology, President of the International Strabismological Association from 2010 to 2014, and President of the Asia Pacific Society of Paediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus. He chaired the Children’s Medical Research Institute, Orthoptic Industry Advisory Board at University of Technology Sydney, and contributed to the StEPS preschool vision screening program in New South Wales. Martin has authored over 60 journal articles and six textbook chapters, delivered named lectures such as the Billson Lecture and Keshmahinder Singh Oration, and mentored medical students, orthoptists, trainees, and fellows. Awards include Member of the Order of Australia in 2001 for services to ophthalmology, RANZCO College Medal in 2009, AAPOS Honour Award, AAO Secretariat Award, and Mark Tso Golden Apple Award for teaching.
