Frederick McKitrick, Ph.D., serves as Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Art & Design at Monmouth University, a position he has held since joining the institution in 1994. He earned his B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. from Columbia University. McKitrick is also affiliated with the Department of History and Anthropology, reflecting his interdisciplinary expertise. He is a specialist in the history of Modern Germany, 20th century Europe, and the French Revolution.
McKitrick's scholarly work includes the publication “An Unexpected Path to Modernisation: The Case of German Artisans during the Second World War,” Journal of Contemporary European History, 1996. As a member of the graduate faculty, he teaches numerous courses demonstrating his expertise in European history. Frequently taught courses include Blood & Iron: Germany in the Nineteenth Century (HS 357), Europe Since 1939 (HS 272), Europe, 1914-1939 (HS 271), French Revolution (HS 542), French Revolution and Napoleon (HS 344), Modern Germany, 1914-Present (HS 358), Research Seminar in European History (HS 441), Senior Show (AR SHO), The German Empire, 1871-1914 (HS 544), The Third Reich (HS 547), The Weimar Republic, 1918-1933 (HS 546), Western Civilization in World Perspective I (HS 101), and Western Civilization in World Perspective II (HS 102). Recently taught courses include Anti-Judaism and Anti-Semitism in European History (HS 540), World War I (HS 545), and Art and Design Student Portfolio Review (AR REV). McKitrick's roles in both art/design leadership and history education contribute to Monmouth University's academic offerings.
