About Fumito

Fumito Maruyama is a professor at Hiroshima University’s The IDEC Institute, where he leads the Microbial Genomics and Ecology group. He also holds professorships in the Graduate School of Advanced Science and Engineering’s Science and Engineering Integration Programme and the Graduate School of Innovation and Practice for Smart Society. Maruyama earned his bachelor’s degree from the College of Liberal Arts at International Christian University in 2000. He completed graduate studies at Osaka University, receiving his Ph.D. in Pharmacy. His earlier career included adjunct fellow positions at the Graduate School and School of Pharmaceutical Sciences at Osaka University from 2005 to 2006.

Maruyama’s research focuses on microbial genomics and ecology, with emphasis on the survival and coexistence strategies of pathogenic microorganisms in the environment. His work includes studies of interactions between bloom-forming algae and pathogenic microbes, as well as investigations into ultrasmall bacteria such as Patescibacteria. In 2026, he was selected as the sole Japanese awardee for the U.S. Department of Energy Joint Genome Institute Community Science Program Large Scale Call, supporting genome research on these microorganisms and their symbiotic relationships. Maruyama serves as principal investigator of the Microbial Genomics and Ecology Lab and contributes to collaborative projects in environmental microbiology.
