Prof. Govindan Rangarajan obtained an Integrated MSc (Hons) degree from the Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani, and a PhD from the University of Maryland, College Park, USA. He worked as a staff scientist at the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory, University of California, Berkeley, before joining the Indian Institute of Science as an assistant professor in the Department of Mathematics in 1992. He has been a faculty member there since and currently serves as Director of IISc, a position he has held since August 2020. He previously served as Chair of the Department of Mathematics and Convener of the Digital Information Services Centre from 2002 to 2008, Chair of the International Relations Cell from 2008 to 2014, Chair of the Division of Interdisciplinary Research from 2014 to 2020, and Chair of the Office of Development and Alumni Affairs from 2015 to 2020.

Prof. Rangarajan’s research interests include nonlinear dynamics and chaos, time series analysis, and mathematical biology. He is a JC Bose National Fellow, a Fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Sciences, India, and was awarded the Chevalier dans l’Ordre des Palmes Academiques by the Government of France. He was also a Homi Bhabha Fellow. He headed the National Mathematics Initiative and the Indo-US Virtual Institute for Mathematics and Statistical Sciences, and he currently directs the Indo-French Centre for Applied Mathematics. He was instrumental in establishing the interdisciplinary PhD programme in mathematical sciences at IISc and co-PI of the Indo-French Cyber University Project for satellite-based courses.
