About Garry

Professor Garry Griffith serves as Associate Professor in Agricultural and Agribusiness Economics and Professor of Agribusiness within the Agricultural & Resource Economics and Agribusiness research group in the School of Agriculture, Food and Ecosystem Sciences at the University of Melbourne. He earned his PhD from the University of New England, Master of Economics from Macquarie University, and Bachelor of Agricultural Economics from the University of New England, with further studies at the University of Guelph in Canada. His career spans 38 years as a research economist with the New South Wales Government, retiring in 2011 as Principal Research Scientist. Griffith led economics programs in the Beef and Sheep Cooperative Research Centres. He holds an adjunct professorship at the University of New England Business School and an honorary position at the University of Adelaide.

Griffith specializes in agribusiness economics, applying economic models to assess impacts of technological changes, advertising, and policies on Australian agricultural industries, including benefit distribution across market structures and price formation in food and fibre markets. Notable publications include "Agricultural Markets and Marketing Policies," "Product Quality Information in Supply Chains: A Performance-Linked Conceptual Framework Applied to the Australian Red Meat Industry," "Turning a Negative into a Positive: What to Do About Negative Externalities from Nitrogen Used in Farming," "Food Loss and Waste in Maize in Mozambique and its Economic Impacts," and "Market Power in the Australian Chicken Meat Industry." He was honored as the 2010 Distinguished Fellow by the Australian Agricultural and Resource Economics Society. As managing editor of the Australasian Agribusiness Review, Australasian Agribusiness Perspectives, and Australian Farm Business Management Journal, he contributes to the field's discourse. Current research is funded by ACIAR, Meat & Livestock Australia, Australian Meat Processor Corporation, and Dairy Australia.
