Gary Biddle is Professor of Financial Accounting in the Department of Accounting within the Faculty of Business and Economics at the University of Melbourne. He earned his MBA and PhD degrees from the University of Chicago. An international scholar who has worked across multiple continents, Professor Biddle joined the University of Melbourne in 2017, bringing extensive experience from prior roles including Chair Professor of Accounting at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and visiting positions at Columbia Business School and London Business School. His research examines the role of accounting information in capital markets, with a focus on corporate governance, value creation, valuation, management compensation, performance metrics, and Economic Value Added (EVA).
Professor Biddle has published influential papers in premier accounting journals. Key publications include 'How Does Financial Reporting Quality Relate to Investment Efficiency?' (Journal of Accounting and Economics, 2009, with G. Hilary and R.S. Verdi), which demonstrates the conditional association between reporting quality and efficient investments and has over 4,900 citations; 'Accounting Quality and Firm-Level Capital Investment' (The Accounting Review, 2006, with G. Hilary), exploring how accounting quality affects capital investment decisions; and 'When Capital Follows Profitability: Non-Linear Residual Income Dynamics' (with others). His scholarship has amassed over 11,000 Google Scholar citations, underscoring its impact on understanding financial reporting's effects on firm performance and resource allocation. Professor Biddle has received 30 teaching honors, including three Professor of the Year awards from the world's top-ranked executive MBA program at Columbia University. He delivered the 2018 CPA Australia-University of Melbourne Annual Research Lecture, 'How Accountants Shape Civilisations and the Nature of Accountability,' highlighting accounting's historical and societal roles. Additionally, he has contributed to academic committees, such as the American Accounting Association's Lifetime Service Award Committee.
