Gary Dufour is an Adjunct Associate Professor in the UWA School of Design at the University of Western Australia. An accomplished art historian based in Mount Claremont, Western Australia, he earned his BFA with Distinction from the University of Regina in 1976 and an MFA from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design University in 1979. Dufour's academic and research interests center on the history of modern and contemporary art across North America, Europe, and Australia. He is recognized internationally as an authority on artists including Jeff Wall, Guido Molinari, Lawrence Weiner, Max Pam, and Howard Taylor, with expertise in international modern and contemporary art, as well as Western Australian art.
Throughout his distinguished career, Dufour served as Chief Curator and Deputy Director of the Art Gallery of Western Australia from 1995 to 2013, Senior Curator at the Vancouver Art Gallery from 1988 to 1995, and Curator of Prints and Drawings at the Art Gallery of Western Australia from 1983 to 1987. Earlier appointments include Chief Curator at the MacKenzie Art Gallery from 1987 to 1988, Assistant Professor at the University of Regina from 1981 to 1983, and Lecturer at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in 1980. He has also been Lecturer in Curatorial Studies at the University of Victoria in 1992, Australian curator-in-residence at ISCP in New York in 2007, and Canadian Commissioner for the Biennale of Sydney in 1992. Dufour received the Dr. K. David Edwards and Margery Edwards Charitable Trust curator-in-residence award in 2007. He has authored and edited key publications such as Jeff Wall Catalogue Raisonné 2005–2021 (Gagosian, 2022), Jeff Wall Photographs (NGV, 2012), Howard Taylor: A Painter's Journal (Art Gallery of Western Australia, 2025), Allan Sekula: Geography Lesson: Canadian Notes (MIT Press, 1997), and Max Pam's memoir The Contingency of Eye Contact (Éditions Bessard, 2023). Recent essays include those on Lawrence Weiner in Vancouver (2025), Claude Tousignant: Septimale 1969 (2025), and Howard Taylor: Flight of a magpie II (2025). His curatorial contributions feature Van Gogh, Dali, and Beyond: The World Reimagined, and he has introduced public lectures such as the 2024 Annual Duldig Lecture.
