About Gavin

Professor Gavin Reid serves as Professor of Bioanalytical Chemistry in the School of Chemistry within the Faculty of Science at the University of Melbourne. He concurrently holds a professorial position in the Department of Biochemistry and Pharmacology and is affiliated with the Bio21 Molecular Science and Biotechnology Institute. Reid obtained his PhD in Chemistry from the University of Melbourne in 2001. His academic career has been centered at the University of Melbourne, where he has advanced mass spectrometry technologies for bioanalytical applications. Previously, he served as Executive Director of Metabolomics Australia and currently holds the role of Associate Dean (Infrastructure) in the Faculty of Science. In 2023, he was appointed to the Australian Research Council College of Experts. Reid's research focuses on mass spectrometry, analytical chemistry, lipidomics, and proteomics, developing methods for lipid analysis in diverse systems including mammalian, plant, parasite, and microalgae samples, as well as investigations into proteome solubility, folding, and interactions.

Reid has garnered significant recognition for his contributions to the field, including the ANZSMS Morrison Medal and inclusion on The Analytical Scientist Power List 2020. His scholarly output is prolific, with over 250 peer-reviewed publications and more than 18,600 citations documented on Google Scholar. Notable publications include 'Rifaximin prophylaxis causes resistance to the last-resort antibiotic colistin in a human gut model' published in Nature in 2024, 'Characterization of brain-derived extracellular vesicle lipids' in 2021, 'Detailed Structural Characterization of Sphingolipids via 193 nm Ultraviolet Photodissociation Mass Spectrometry' in 2017, 'FAIMS Shotgun Lipidomics for Enhanced Class- and Charge-State-Specific Ion Mobility Separations of Lipids' in Analytical Chemistry in 2024, and 'A monophasic extraction strategy for the simultaneous lipidome analysis of polar and nonpolar retina lipids' in 2014. Reid has delivered seminars such as the RSC School Seminar and leads major research facilities, including an ultra-high-resolution mass spectrometry facility for lipidomics research. His work has substantial impact on advancing proteomics and lipidomics methodologies.
