Gavin R. Slemp is an Associate Professor in the Centre for Wellbeing Science within the Melbourne Graduate School of Education, Faculty of Education, at the University of Melbourne. He earned his Doctor of Psychology from Monash University in 2013, along with a Bachelor of Arts with Honours. As a registered organisational psychologist, Slemp's academic career has focused on advancing research in motivational psychology and workplace wellbeing. His investigations apply self-determination theory to explore autonomy support, job crafting, intrinsic need satisfaction, and their impacts on motivation, performance, and mental health in occupational and educational settings. Slemp previously worked at the Centre for Positive Psychology and has contributed to projects on positive education, life crafting interventions, and adolescent wellbeing studies.
Slemp's prolific scholarship includes over 50 peer-reviewed publications, many as meta-analyses synthesizing evidence across studies. Key works encompass 'Leader Autonomy Support in the Workplace: A Meta-Analytic Review' (2018), 'Interpersonal Supports for Basic Psychological Needs and Their Relations With Motivation, Well-Being, and Performance: A Meta-Analysis' (2024), 'Longitudinal Job Crafting Research: A Meta-Analysis' (2024), 'Factors Associated with Teacher Wellbeing: A Meta-Analysis' (2024), and 'A Meta-analysis of the Antecedents of Teacher Turnover and Retention' (2024). His research has accumulated more than 3,800 citations, demonstrating significant influence in the fields of organisational psychology and education. In 2025, Slemp co-led a team awarded a $327,202 Australian Research Council Discovery Grant for a three-year project aimed at improving the wellbeing and retention of early-career teachers in Australia. He serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Vocational Behavior and engages in public outreach on topics like job crafting and teacher motivation.
